Short Breaks at Short Notice

Caring for someone?  Can't leave them but need to be somewhere else at the same time?  Need a rest?  Don't receive any other form of respite?

Whether you want to spend some time with friends, have a break away, or would just like some time to yourself, Short Breaks at Short Notice may be able help you to have a break from caring.

Who will provide the care?

A trained and experienced care worker from either Crossroads Care or a Social Services approved agency will provide care tailored to individual situations.

I'm concerned about leaving the person I care?

This is only natural - after all, you are the one providing all the care.  We can ask your care worker or their manager to come along before the break to get to know you and the person you care for, so that you can feel completely confident having a break.  Just ask.

How long is a "Short Break"?

The scheme provides breaks from 2 to 48 hours at a time (up to a maximum of 48 hrs in any year).

How short is "Short Notice"?

We ask for a minimum of 2 working days notice to arrange a Short Break.

How much does it cost?

Absolutely nothing for Carers.  The scheme is funded by Norfolk County Council, Adult Service to provide breaks for carers.

I receive regular respite from elsewhere, funded by the local authority, do I still qualify?

Unfortunately at present, we wouldn't be able to assist.  If you talk to the organisation who provides your regular care, they may be able to alter it to cover your break.  We have needed to prioritise the service so that carers who receive no other support or respite can access it.

I receive a direct payment/personal budget, can I access short breaks?

If you manage your own budget using these payments then you can arrange a short break direct with a respite provider, this way you will have control of when you have the break and who you would like providing it.  If you are not yet in receipt of direct payments and would like to know more, please call Norfolk Carers Helpline on 0808 808 9876 to find out more.

Are there any exclusions?

We can't provide a service where someone aged under 18 is the carer or is the person being looked after.  However, do stay in touch with us as this may change in the future.  We also do not cover emergency situations or provide relief / cover holiday or sickness for paid care workers - please contact Norfolk Social Services on 0344 800 8014 for help in these instances.

Sounds great - how do I find out more?

Contact the Norfolk Carers Helpline on 0808 808 9876 between 8am and 8pm, Monday to Friday.  Friendly staff will take some details, make arrangements and call you back to confirm.
