Awareness Raising in Schools

Young Carers may experience difficulties at school, such as poor attendance and failure to reach full academic potential.  Caring may also affect their emotional and physical health and lead to social isolation.

Many Young Carers are 'hidden' as they do not wish to seem different from their peers.  They may be concerned about teasing and bullying, and worry about official intervention.

  • The Young Carers Schools Project can offer:

  • Support and advice;

  • Someone to talk to;

  • A chance to join a Young Carers support group and have time off from caring;

  • Opportunities to go out and have fun;

  • A chance to improve academic achievement;

  • Improved self esteem.

The aim of the Young Carers Schools Project is to talk to teachers and other staff in schools and deliver awareness raising lessons and assemblies to all pupils in Primary and Middle Schools.
